Ad-free forever
The mission of Type the Word is for God to be glorified as we focus our attention on Him. Ads are inherently a distraction, so Type the Word will never have them.
In 2023, I was working full-time as a software engineer and started dealing with pain in my forearms from long days at the computer. I decided to switch to a new keyboard layout, which meant spending time each day practicing typing again. At first, I used a tool called Monkeytype. It worked well for building speed and accuracy, but I didn' like how much of my focus was being spent on random words and quotes.
I realized that typing is a form of meditation. If I was going to practice every day, I wanted that meditation to be on God's Word. So I started typing through the Psalms by copying passages from Bible Gateway into my notes app. By Psalm 120, I realized a lot of my focus was being spent checking my accuracy, looking back and forth, and constantly finding my place again.
That's when I snapped and realized I should build something better, a program for typing through Scripture that would protect my focus and remove as much toil as possible.
I shared the first version on Reddit, and the idea resonated with other believers. In 2024, Janet, one of the earliest Type the Word users, found that Reddit post and decided to type through the entire Bible. Her consistency and the consistency of so many other people has kept me building ever since.
In 2025, I started thinking about how this could serve Christian schools. Teachers need typing software that helps students build a practical skill, but the available options often come with tradeoffs: questionable ads, uncontrolled content, and over gamification. Type the Word could offer something different: typing practice focused on the Bible that supports biblical literacy, Scripture memory, and Christian values.
Since Type the Word is built for Christian schools, I can focus on problems related to typing Scripture, like how to support memorization. I'm just getting started, but the goal will always be to support Christian schools as they train up the next generation.
